How we're supporting NHS Test and Trace

The NHS Test and Trace service is part of the government's COVID-19 response which:

  • ensures that anyone who develops symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) can quickly be tested to find out if they have the virus
  • helps trace close recent contacts of anyone who tests positive for coronavirus, and if necessary notifies them that they must self-isolate at home to help stop the spread of the virus.

Barnsley COVID-19 support service

We're supporting the national test and trace efforts by providing a local support scheme in Barnsley for people who test positive for COVID-19.

If you test positive for COVID-19, an advisor from Barnsley Council’s COVID-19 support service may contact you to offer support during your isolation and to signpost you to additional help you may need. The team will work with you to identify your contacts, in a bid to reduce the spread of the virus. It's important that you share details of those you've been in direct contact with to help us reduce transmission rates. This service is anonymous.

Our COVID-19 support service will contact you by phone from the number 01226 774666.

What we'll ask you

When we contact you we'll ask for:

  • your name and date of birth
  • who you live with
  • any places you’ve visited, eg work or school
  • the names and details of people you’ve been in close contact with recently (to be followed up by NHS Test and Trace)

This information will help us to identify people who may also need to isolate.

If our advisors are unable to contact you by phone, we may visit your home to provide support and advice to help you self-isolate safely and signpost you to further help available. Our advisors will follow COVID-secure guidance if they make a home visit.

The information you give to the Barnsley COVID-19 support service will be handled securely in accordance with data protection law. Read our privacy statement for more information.

Please be aware, there are a number of COVID-19 scams taking place at the moment.

If our support service does contact you we will not ask you:

  • for your bank details
  • to set a password or PIN over the phone
  • to call a premium rate number, such as those starting in 09 or 087

If you think you’ve been scammed, tell your bank and report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. Always report a possible scam; it could save someone else from becoming a victim.
