Temporary changes to council services due to coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions

There are some changes to the following services due to the latest government coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions.

Please revisit this webpage, as we'll be keeping it up to date with the latest information about any changes to service opening times or closures.

Bins and recycling

Our household waste recycling centres are all open with some restrictions on site, to ensure that the facilities can be used safely. There's more information about using our recycling centres here.

Our bin collections services are all operating as usual. We'll tell you about missed bin collections that we're aware of here. 

Building control

The drop-in advice service at Westgate Plaza is currently suspended. Please email enquires to buildingcontrol@barnsley.gov.uk 

Councillor surgeries

All face-to-face councillor surgeries are currently suspended. You can still contact your councillor by email.

Family centres

Homeless and housing advice

The Civic is currently closed. Find out about changes to our homeless and housing advice service.

Libraries

All library branches are open except for Priory Campus. Due to national restrictions, between 5 November and 2 December you can only pre-order and collect books. You'll also be able to use a computer for essential reasons. You can't browse and choose books in branches. Read more about changes at our libraries due to coronavirus (COVID-19).

Markets

Due to the latest national restrictions, non-essential stalls will close from Wednesday 4 November to Wednesday 2 December.

Stalls selling essential items – including meat and fish, pet food and other essential groceries will remain open.

Please adhere to social distancing when visiting the indoor/outdoor markets and shop alone if you can. Shopping visits should be carried out as quickly as possible to allow other shoppers to come into the market and support the traders.

You'll need to wear a face covering before entering the indoor market, unless there's a good reason not to do so.

Essential stalls will be trading at the Barnsley Outdoor Market and the Local Markets in Penistone, Wombwell and Hoyland, selling a variety of goods including food, hardware, pet food and plants.

We're currently working on a click and collect service with some of our traders. Further details will be added to this page and shared on our social media platforms.

Market Kitchen

Due to changes announced by the government Market Kitchen will be closed from Thursday 5 November to Wednesday 2 December.

Jar Bar and Nero’s Pizza will remain open for delivery and/or collection. Visit balkanexperience.co.uk to place your order.

Museums

All Barnsley Museums will be closed between 5 November and 2 December. This includes:

  • Cooper Gallery
  • Cannon Hall Musuem
  • Elsecar Heritage Visitor Centre
  • Experience Barnsley
  • Worsbrough Mill (buildings)
  • Barnsley Archives and Local Studies

The outside spaces at the following will remain open:

  • Cannon Hall parklands -car park, children's play area, toilets and the cafe (for takeaway orders only)
  • Worsbrough Mill Country Park -- car park, children’s play area, café (for takeaways only) and toilets. Flour will be available from Worsbrough Mill via click and collect on Wednesdays and Sundays only and can be ordered online via ShopAppy.

Some of the shops at Elsecar Heritage Centre are classed as essential and will remain open.

Others will continue to offer a high quality online service, deliveries and drop-offs. Selected shops are expected to offer a click and collect service. For more information visit Elsecar Heritage Centre, see social media or contact individual shops direct.

Planning

The drop-in advice service at Wellington House is currently suspended. Please email enquiries to developmentmanagement@barnsley.gov.uk

Registrars

Due to government restrictions, no wedding or civil partnership ceremonies can be held between 5 November and 2 December.

Appointments for births, to give notice of marriage or arrange a ceremony are still taking place, at Barnsley Town Hall Register Office only. 

Death registration appointments are currently taking place over the telephone.

Sport

Fixtures and training for indoor and outdoor youth and adult grassroots football are currently suspended.

All fixtures and training for steps three to six of the National League system, ie the Northern Premier Division and below, are also suspended.

School sport can continue as an exemption during the national restrictions.
