Join us at our inspiring schedule of exciting events during Creativity and Wellbeing Week from 16 to 22 May 2022 to discover the benefits of creativity and unleash your inner artist. From music and crafts to outdoor activities, there’s something for everyone.

Casting Characters: The Worlds of Graham Ibbeson Saturday 26 March to Sunday 31 July 2022 Gallery @ The Glass Works, Barnsley town centre

An exclusive new Graham Ibbeson exhibition showcasing iconic sculptures, created by the Barnsley-born artist.

The display includes moulds of well-loved performers, which later became bronze statues, in their raw state using a fibreglass technique, part of the sculpting process. Free to enter.

Sculpture hunt Saturday 9 April to Thursday 1 September 2022 Barnsley town centre

See Barnsley town centre as you have never seen it before with this free trail aimed at little legs and enquiring minds that takes you around some of the amazing public art on display in Barnsley.

Join Barnsley Museums online for creative ideas for getting outdoors as a family.

Teachers and families can also explore a range of resources and activities, from yoga, to drawing and music, that take inspiration from Barnsley Museums collections, buildings and green spaces to support children’s physical, social and emotional wellbeing.

Barnsley Serves the World - stories from the Slazenger's Factory Saturday 9 April to Saturday 8 October 2022 Experience Barnsley

Barnsley Museums will be serving up a treat with this celebration of all things Slazenger. At the world-famous factory, found right here in Barnsley, brilliant balls were made, later travelling to all the top tournaments right across the world!

The exhibition will showcase the stories of the people who worked there, reliving memories and fun times in the factory. There will be top tennis objects, photographs and films, activities for sporting fans of all ages with lots to see and will be sure to raise a smile.

For tennis fans or just fans of Barnsley, this exhibition is set to make quite a racquet. Free entry.

Discovery trail Ongoing Cannon Hall Bring the family to explore magical and mythical creatures in our woodland discovery trail – visit the Cannon Hall website for further information. This is a free, self-led activity during daylight hours.
Wild about Worsbrough rubbing trail Ongoing Worsbrough Mill Explore Worsbrough Mill country park and see it's inhabitants as never before. Visit the Worsbrough Mill website for further information. Take part in this fun rubbing trail, find all 16 creatures and find out all their funky facts! This is a free, self-led trail open 11am to 4pm during daylight hours.

Seeing Music, Hearing Colour

Barnsley Civic

Seeing Music, Hearing Colour is a new interactive multimedia exhibition from Barnsley-based composer Helen Madden and artist Chiomah Akanwa Dey. See the Barnsley Civic website for more information.

Remember to bring your headphones; each artwork will be displayed with a QR code enabling you to hear recordings of all compositions and musical responses whilst observing the corresponding work.

If you would like to hear the music performed live there will be an exhibition opening event on Sunday 8 May 2022, with live musical performances and a chance to chat to the composer, artists and musicians involved.

Join us at Wellington House between 12pm and 2pm for a workshop that will cover some simple techniques to help you develop a more positive outlook.

BIADS singers

Join the Barnsley Independent Alzheimer's and Dementia Support (BIADS) group for an afternoon of singing your favourite songs followed by refreshments:

Gentle accessible stroll - an accessible relaxed amble to the conservatory. Hear about some of the Wentworth Castle Gardens story and have the opportunity to ask questions. There are benches along the way to stop and soak in the views.

Activities for all - Sculpture Garden

This event include stone carving and willow work, picnics, live music and social activities. Lots of creative fun for all in the fab carers' garden including:

  • 12pm to 4pm - Sculptor Michael Disley will be leading a stone carving workshop and Leilah 'Dragon Willow' will be making willow animals to inhabit your patch
  • 4pm to 6pm - Live music and picnic - bring your own food (drinks and sweet treats provided)
  • Open to All (to book for the stone carving workshop text 'STONE' to 07916282064 - be prepared to spend some time and come with a design

Directions: walk from the bus station up Queens Road and find the Carers' Garden behind Barnsley Metrodome. If you are travelling by car, be sure to ask for a permit (from the UPLIFT team) at the garden, on arrival.

‘While this event is open to all we are prioritising the stone carving workshop for UPLIFT participants. Green UPLIFT is a green prescribing project developed by Creative Recovery. It gives people who are struggling with low mood, social isolation and/or having a difficult time in their lives a chance to get out in nature in good company doing fun, creative things. If you feel you could benefit from this project, please text ‘UPLIFT’ to 07916282064. One of our UPLIFT team will be in touch via phone with more information. If eligible you will be offered the chance to register for a free 3-month programme of fab outdoor events.’

Activities for all - Wentworth Castle Gardens walks 

Parkland monument tour - a steady guided walk through the Parkland to discover some key monuments on the estate, a brief history of the House and its early occupants. It is also likely that you will catch sightings of red and fallow deer.

Mindful walking at Wentworth - this guided mindful walk invites you to explore the space differently, pausing and taking your time. The walk will be interspersed with mindfulness practices appropriate to the spaces we find ourselves in. Book is recommended due to limited spaces.

Walk and talk with a gardener - take a walk through the gardens with your tour guide. An introduction to the variety of planting including the national collections of Rhododendrons and Camellias.
