Welcome from the Leader of the Council, Councillor Sir Steve Houghton CBE

Thank you for taking the time to visit this website and find out more about the role of Chief Executive at Barnsley Council.

Barnsley is a council with ambition, flair and imagination with a real drive and honest focus on continuous improvement. Equally, we’re proud of our values and genuine commitment to put our customers and communities at the very heart of everything we do.

What we're doing

Our role as a council is changing. We’ll concentrate on providing services where they’re most needed and will have the most impact, and we’ll help people to do more for each other and their community.

Town Spirit gives us a clear way of sharing our work with our communities and residents. It allows us to:

  • tell our stories and showcase our ambitions for Barnsley as a great place to live, work, invest in and visit.
  • help our communities, customers and businesses to understand what we do and don't do and manage their expectations.
  • show our communities, customers and businesses how all of our work fits together – removing the barriers so people can see the links between the services they get from us.
  • inspire people to act in their local communities. It encourages innovative services and drives change through communities coming together.

Barnsley is currently undergoing a spectacular transformation. You can read about it in our performance reports, on our news pages and social media accounts

Our Barnsley town centre redevelopment is well underway, with the build of The Glass Works, new market and our Library @ the Lightbox.

As part of the exciting regeneration plan we're also ploughing extra investment into boosting local high streets across the borough.

Principal Towns is a £5 million investment project set up to improve local economies in the surrounding areas and help local high streets thrive. The programme launched in 2018 and will be running until March 2020.

Our values

We live and work by our four values: honesty, teamwork, excellent service and taking pride in what we do. As part of our team you can be sure we’ll do all we can to support you in being truly excellent. You see, we prioritise learning and enabling staff to achieve their potential. That’s one of the reasons why we achieved IIP Gold and why you’ll find your career here inspiring and rewarding.
