Welcome
Barnsley Council is looking for a Head of Public Health (Consultant in Public Health) with ambition, energy and vision to bring about change for our residents, working in a varied and challenging environment and within a strong public health leadership team.
Barnsley really is the place of possibilities. We’re a double award-winning, high-performing council with a growing economy, a thriving town centre and some truly impressive outcomes in our communities. This is why we’ve been awarded Council of the Year for 2023 by the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) and The Municipal Journal (MJ). Our excellent public health team has been a key part of our win; we’re so proud of what we’ve achieved not just for the council but for our partners and Barnsley.
It's the perfect time to join our excellent team.
Public health sits at the heart of Barnsley Council. As a Head of Public Health (CPH), you can expect to provide advice on all health matters to elected members, employees and stakeholders. As someone who can build strong relationships of trust and confidence across and beyond the council, you will enjoy working in a collaborative and supportive senior team.
Maintaining and developing specialist Public Health skills across the domains is important to us and therefore you will be stimulated by a portfolio which will span the domains of Public Health and will stretch and develop your Public Health and systems leadership. Its exact scope will develop over time but, from the outset, you will take a strategic, public health lead for mental health, learning disabilities and autism, influencing and directing resources across health and care to deliver Place aims and ambitions. You will be an active contributor at a Place and System level driving programmes of work which address prevention, early help and the wider determinants of health.
The role requires a high level of intellectual rigour, political awareness, negotiation and motivation skills and flexibility in order to deal with complex public health issues, advise and make recommendations. Tact and diplomacy are also essential as is the ability to understand, work with and influence others.
