Why volunteer with us?

Volunteering with us has lots of benefits and can help you:

  • gain confidence and build relationships
  • meet new people
  • make a difference to people, communities and society
  • become part of the community
  • learn new skills
  • take on new challenges

As well as helping you gain experience, it can also be fun!

Equality, diversity and inclusion

Our volunteers make a valuable contribution to the delivery of services to local people, communities and neighbourhoods. They're an essential part of a network of people and organisations that help create stronger and healthier communities.

Everyone in Barnsley is encouraged and supported to make a contribution to their local community through volunteering, regardless of their gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, religious belief, marital status, pregnancy or gender identity.

Taking part in activities, and the benefit they bring to local people and communities, can give you a sense of self-worth and pride, and helps you feel integral to the local community. The skills and knowledge you acquire when volunteering gives you confidence and can help you move towards paid employment.

Volunteering also helps those who may otherwise be isolated to mix with others, and for people from different backgrounds to meet and get to know each other. This could be older people and younger people volunteering together, and local residents working alongside new arrivals to the borough.

Get involved

There's lots of volunteering opportunities to get involved with, including supporting events, working in our libraries, and at Barnsley museums. You can also help out in your local community through Love Where You Live.

You can search for available volunteer roles with us on the Do-it website.

There's also volunteering opportunities especially for 16 to 24 year olds on I Know I Can (IKIC).

Barnsley CVS offer one to one meetings to people who want to find out what they can do as a volunteer. You can also find out what volunteering roles are available.

Hear from our volunteers

You can read about what some of our volunteers have to say about working with us below:

Suzanne - infant feeding team

Suzanne started volunteering with us in our infant feeding team. She said, "I love to volunteer with the infant feeding service because I enjoy meeting mums and helping them with their babies. It feels like I'm giving something back to all the ladies that helped me with my own. It also helps me to do something worthwhile with the time I have spare."

Since starting out as a volunteer, Suzanne has now secured a full-time post with us in the infant feeding team.

David - Barnsley libraries

David has been volunteering with us since May 2017. After completing a successful work experience placement at the library whilst at college, he was offered a regular Saturday volunteering role. His main role is helping restock shelves and interacting with customers who visit the library, also recommending books they might enjoy reading.

David says, "I come here every Saturday morning, and if I had a day off college I would volunteer for some extra events like craft activities which can be really busy. I’ve got the motivation to stay, and I'm going to start running a Lego club here soon. I started a new job after I left college and volunteering with the library has helped me to work well with lots of people."

Work placements

We've lots of opportunities for 14 to 18 year olds to gain work experience with us.
