Online Reference Resources
All of the resources are free for use by Barnsley Library Members.
Most of the resources can be accessed outside the library by entering your library membership number after following the links below. If you need help you can book a one-to-one session with staff by contacting 01226 773933.
Ancestry (Family History/Geneology)
The most widely used family history website in the world with over 7 billion searchable names. It includes the census records for England, Wales and Scotland from 1841 to 1901, as well as the Birth, Marriage and Death records for England and Wales from 1837-2005. The 1911 Census Summary books have recently been added. Other resources include British telephone directories dating back to 1880 and a whole host of military records.
Access is only available in the library
If you want to learn a new language, we can offer over 80 different languages via the Byki website. Byki is a language learning system that uses flashcards to teach a set of words or phrases. Mobile phone App available.
E- Audio Books
If you're a member of the library, test drive our new downloadable audio book collection. With One Click Digital you can have 24/7 access to over 600 audiobook titles that you can download onto your MP3 player, phone, iPod or PC. If you have a pc at home with broadband internet access, simply go to One Click Digital, enter your library card number and make sure you fill in all the boxes. You will be asked to create a username and password which you will use to login in future. Once you have created your account each visit will then just require your username and password. Encyclopaedia Britannica: customised for students and general use, it contains articles, a world atlas, dictionary, thesaurus and thousands of images and videos.

Know UK (Encyclopaedia, General Knowledge and Reference)

Know UK is a useful reference resource that includes publications such as the Welfare Benefits Guide, Good Food Guide, UK Course Discover, The Voluntary Agencies Directory and many more. It can help you to find the right university course and funding, help with your homework, find a solicitor or plan a UK trip.

Self-learning course and online simulation for the official UK citizenship test, officially licensed by the Home Office. Signup by registering with your library card. Gives people the opportunity to undertake revision sessions and practice tests before undertaking the national test at their chosen test centre.

Oxford Art Online: a reference dictionary of art and artists, previously titled Grove Art Online. Includes thousands of pictures - some famous and some obscure, together with an explanation of many art terms.

Oxford English Dictionary (Historical Dictionary and Authority on English Language Usage)
Oxford English Dictionary (Please note that at the moment a valid Barnsley Library Membership Card number must be entered to gain access to this resource from within the Library network). This work is a historical dictionary of English, covering the language from the earliest times to the present day. Oxford Music provides access to the resources of Oxford's music reference in one location. Featuring Colin Larkin's Encyclopaedia of Popular Music - a reference work devoted exclusively to popular music. The encyclopaedia is the authoritative biographical encyclopaedia of rock, pop and jazz artists, covering popular music from 1900 to the present. Includes access to information previously contained in Grove Music.

Theory Test Pro contains all the official test questions licensed from the DSA and is an online simulation of the UK's driving theory tests for all vehicle categories. Includes an online version of the Highway Code and hazard perception video simulations.

Up-to-date access to all the most popular British newspapers and most are backdated to the 1990s. Includes all major daily and Sunday National newspapers and many regional newspapers such as the Hull Daily Mail and the Liverpool Echo and magazines such as Computer Weekly and The Grocer. Also provides background reading and information on many topics with links to recent headlines and sites on the web about many topics eg homelessness, bereavement, transport and healthy eating.
