Bookstart is a national scheme that provides books for pre-school children.
You’ll receive a free Bookstart baby pack in your baby’s first year. You can get this from your specialist public health nurse (health visitor), or you can collect a pack for your baby from your local library.
Your child will get another free Bookstart pre-school pack when they are three or four years old, from nursery, playgroup or another early years’ service.
Please ask at your local library if you’ve not received your Bookstart baby pack by the time your baby reaches their first birthday, or their pre-school pack when they reach five years old.
You can find out more about the benefits of sharing books with babies by coming to one of our Tiny Tots Welcome sessions.
Bear’s Reading Adventure is a free sticker book available to library members aged 0-5. Children can pick up their own copy from the library and then collect a sticker to add to the book each time they visit.
National Bookstart Week takes place each year during the first full week in June. Look out for special events and activities in libraries.
See the Bookstart website for more interactive stories, themed activities and competitions.
Time to read
We also work with local schools to encourage children to develop a lifelong love of reading.
Children aged 4-5 years starting full-time school receive a free gift pack containing a story book, parent information and fun activities. For more information and tips on reading with your child visit the Time to Read website.
