About the award

This is an annual award made to reward greatness through voluntary activities. They're given to groups that have helped the people around them.

The award was announced in 2002 as part of The late Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations. It was first known as The Queen's Golden Jubilee Award.

It's given to groups who devote their time to helping others in the community. They help to improve the quality of life for others.

Groups must be nominated by, for example, members of the public, public bodies, or other voluntary groups. Nominations are assessed by a regional committee. They're then passed to a national committee for final selection. After that, The King selects the winners.

Winning groups receive a certificate signed by The King and a piece of crystal for display.

Many different types of groups have won the award since it was launched. It includes groups working to improve the local environment, running community centres, and helping families.
