Love Barnsley

What is The Glass Works?

The Glass Works is the name given to the town centre redevelopment.

Full of retail, restaurants, cafes and leisure.  Work is well underway on this exciting project that will transform Barnsley town centre, it includes:

New town square

A new modern landscaped public square where routes into the town centre meet. The square will be large enough for market stalls and public events, and will look into the refurbished indoor market.

New markets

Bright, open and inspiring, this newly refurbished space creates a flow between outdoor and indoor shopping and is easier to get to for shoppers and businesses. The new market and Market Kitchen is now open, so come and take a look.

New shopping and leisure space

By extending Lambra Road there’ll be a new route behind the redeveloped indoor markets with new shopping and leisure opportunities.  Exciting new shops, restaurants, bowling and cinema.

New community space central library

Newly opened in July 2019 and located on Mayday Green, this state of the art building will be a hub for community activity. Find out more about Library @ the Lightbox.

New bridge

Linking the new town square with the train and bus station, the bridge will open up routes to the new town centre. There'll be a temporary bridge over the Jumble Lane level crossing until the new bridge opens.

From April 2019, the level crossing will close and there'll be new ways to cross the railway. For more information read our news update.

New car parking

High-quality, safe, bright, and easy to access open-air car parking, with plenty of spaces. The new Market Gate car park is already complete and in 2020 there'll be a new multi-storey car park.
