Yellow lines

Yellow lines are used in areas where vehicles are not allowed to park up and wait or load and mean the following:

  • double yellow lines parallel to the kerb - no waiting at any time
  • a single yellow line parallel to the kerb - waiting is not allowed at certain times, as shown on a nearby sign
  • double yellow small lines across the edge of the kerb - no loading at any time
  • a single yellow small line across the edge of the kerb - loading is not allowed at certain times, as shown on a nearby sign

They are found where there are road safety or congestion problems, in places like:

  • a section of road where, if vehicles parked up, they'd cause visibility problems or safety concerns
  • a section of road where loading is restricted

Yellow lines are one of a number of safety measures that we can put in place to improve our roads for motorists and pedestrians. You can read more about road safety here.

Pavements adjacent to yellow lines

If there are yellow lines on a road, the same restrictions apply to the adjacent pavement and grass verges.  You’ll be issued with a parking fine if you park on a pavement where there are waiting restrictions on the road.

If you see someone parking on a pavement adjacent to yellow lines please contact our parking team at carparks@barnsley.gov.uk who can take enforcement action.

We aren't responsible for taking action against motorists parked on pavements where there are no yellow lines.  You should contact the police to report the matter on their non-emergency number 101.
