Councillor Sir Steve Houghton CBE, Leader of Barnsley Council, said: "Over the past 18 months, we've been working with the Sheffield and Hallamshire Motorclub, the organisers of a potential closed road rally in Penistone, to understand the impacts and possible requirements of such an event.

"For such an event to take place, there are licences that would need to be granted and legal processes that would need approval. We're working with the organisers and Motorsport UK to work through these and see if this type of rally should take place in Penistone.

"There will be a report presented to Cabinet in the summer detailing the considerations for councillors before we make a formal decision about approving the race."
