Article: Land and property - demolitions - enforcement Article Body The Building Act 1984 contains provisions that enables councils to control demolition in the interests of the safety and amenity of the public and occupiers/owners of adjacent property. For further information on demolitions and how to apply for a demolition notice, please see land and property -demolitions - control and advice. The Local Authority Demolition Notice (Section 81) may contain conditions under which the demolition is to be carried out and may also carry a time limit for any works to be completed. If you fail to execute the works within the time limited by the notice, the council may carry out the works and recover the costs. Failure to give notice or comply with the conditions or time limit for works on the council's notice is an offence under the Building Act 1984 and would result in a maximum fine of £2,500 (not exceeding level 4 of the Standard Scale as detailed in Part 1, Section 17 of the Criminal Justice Act 1991). You should inform the council as soon as possible if there are any changes to the information you have provided.
