The Library Service is a statutory service governed by the Public Libraries and Museums Act 1964, which requires councils to provide a 'comprehensive and efficient' library service for people who wish to use public libraries.
Within Barnsley, the Library Service consists of the Central Library, ten branch libraries, two mobile libraries and the Home Library Service. There are also a further six Community Library, Learning and Information Centres managed by the Children, Young People and Families Directorate. There are four children's collections for 0-4 years in children's centres which are administered by children's centre and library staff in partnership.
The Library Service mission statement is 'To provide an inclusive community based library service that gives all residents of Barnsley the opportunity to pursue their own recreational, educational and intellectual interests by providing a wide range of access to literature, information and learning materials in a variety of media.'
