Welcome to the webpages for the Library Service in Barnsley which is free and open to everyone, giving access to a wide range of books, information and entertainment in print, digital and audio, with staff providing help for people to access all of the resources at their disposal.
Libraries are governed by the Public Libraries and Museums Act 1964, which requires councils to provide a 'comprehensive and efficient' library service for people who wish to use them. However, libraries are changing and continually improving so that people can continue to use and enjoy them in different ways. Libraries now offer access to IT resources online and can often help to get people started on their online journey by offering short introductory classes or taster sessions.
There are reading groups, the home delivery service for the elderly and disabled; and in a new partnership with the Registrar's Service, newborn babies are able to become library members when their birth is registered. We are also able to offer small collections to community venues if needed.
Here are a selection of new library leaflets giving information about the variety of services available:-
