Dropped kerbs

If you intend to drive a vehicle over the pavement into your driveway, you should have a dropped kerb. If you don’t and you drive over the pavement, you’re breaking the law. 

You need to apply for a licence to drop a kerb. Doing the work without a licence is an offence, and if we find you've done this we'll charge you £285 and may take legal action.

Before you apply

If you're planning on dropping a kerb but you don’t own your home or the land it's on, you should contact the owner about your plans before applying.

If you live on a classified road, you also need to have the necessary planning permission before applying to drop a kerb.

Who can do the work

We can install a dropped kerb for you, or you can use your own contractor as long as they're properly licensed to do the work.

If you ask us to install the dropped kerb for you, we’ll contact you to discuss your needs and give you a no obligation quote for the work.

If you're employing your own contractor, they must be Street Works Qualification Registered and have public liability insurance cover to the value of £5 million. The contractor will be responsible for any third party insurance claims made as a result of works on the highway.

Fees

The standard charge to drop a kerb before starting any works is £285 - for administration, inspection checking, and the adoption of the completed works.

If you employ us to complete the work for you, the standard charge is £95 - for administration costs only.

This standard charge does not include the cost of actually completing the works.

How to apply

You can apply to drop a kerb by filling in and returning the application form:

• Dropped kerb application form (Microsoft Word version)

If you live on a classified road, you'll need to provide your planning permission reference number on the form.

If you're employing your own contractor to complete the works, you also need to send us copies of their:

• Street Works Qualification Register card - for both an operative and a supervisor

• public liability insurance certificate to the value of £5 million

What happens after applying

When we've received your form we'll process your application and contact you within 28 days.
