                                  Being a Volunteer

Today, one of our committee members took a step back to enjoy her retirement. I asked her, "What had being a volunteer meant to her?" This is her reply.

Since retiring, I have spent most of the last 16 years volunteering in one capacity or another for 3 local organisations.

Volunteering with Barnsley u3a has been especially beneficial because of the friendships made - I had moved back to Barnsley as a widow with no children, having left when I was 18years old to train then work in the Midlands.

Friends made through Bu3a have enabled me to feel I belong, I have people I can turn to and socialise with. Through taking on different roles I have continued to contribute to making things happen, I’ve shared my skills and interests, I’ve felt valued.
Volunteering in Bu3a really has been rewarding for me - I know others will gain a lot by offering to volunteer themselves.
Thank you Sue

                                 Members Monthly Meeting

*A Musical Delight at Our Members' Monthly Meeting!**

We were treated to an exceptional Afternoon Meeting as our very own concert party took the stage to entertain us with a delightful selection of songs. Led by Gerard's infectious enthusiasm, the group captivated our audience with their performance.

One of the highlights of the afternoon came when the men suddenly transformed, donning wigs, and the group belted out a selection of Beatles songs that had everyone singing along and tapping their feet.

We were also treated to some brilliant harmonica playing by Gerard, and all the singers were fabulous, with superb guitar playing from the amazing guitarists.

It was truly a memorable and enjoyable afternoon, showcasing the incredible talent and camaraderie within our Bu3a community. Looking forward to many more musical moments at our future meetings!

Then we got to the serious stuff. Jean Embury, our Activity Safety and Compliance Officer, introduced us to Copyright by showing us an excellent video produced by our own members. If you couldn't make the meeting, it's available to members on our website.

                Group of The Week

                                The Gardeners group

The Gardeners group is aimed at members with an active interest in hands-on gardening. We are interested in all aspects of gardening and horticulture, meeting weekly—weather permitting! New members are very welcome.

The group caters to both those new to gardening and those with many seasons under their belts. Our goal is to provide an outlet for practical, hands-on gardening, ideally as part of community-based initiatives

The group meets weekly on Wednesdays from 13:00 to 16:00 at Wentworth Castle. One of the paintings below is our plan for the garden at Wentworth, created by one of our members.

Penistone MOTO

Penistone MOTO (Members On Their Own) recently explored the historic Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield, immersing themselves in its rich history and culture. The visit offered an enjoyable and informative experience, deepening their understanding of Sheffield’s heritage. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or seeking enrichment, a visit to the Cutlers’ Hall is highly recommended.

GERI & the ATRIX

You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy history.

This morning, we had a great time at The History Group with a double treat! ๐ŸŽ‰ John and Ingrid took us on a thrilling Viking Cruise from Ginnungagap to Ragnarok—spanning from before Creation to the End of the World! ๐Ÿšข๐Ÿ”ฎ There was no need to book your ticket; you just turned up and joined the adventure!๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝBut wait, there's more! In the second half, Andrew enlightened us about the Viking legacy on place names. ๐Ÿž๏ธ Plus, we got our thinking caps on for a quiz with prizes! ๐ŸŽ Andrew even did some research on the villages in our local area— who would have thought Birdwell meant fertility? Talk about a true Viking exploration! โš”๏ธ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝDidn't miss out ๐ŸŒŸ if you’re not a U3A member, then this is just one more reason to join.   bu3a.org.uk

Correction on the e-Buzz:

The date should read 2024.

As we conclude Mental Health Awareness Week, it seems

appropriate to share a poem written

by one of our members.

The Darker Side

I remember when life wasn’t always so good

I’ve had my share of troubles, often not understood

Others I know have also been there to hell

When dignity is all that’s left to help us keep well

Some can feel dark but it doesn't show too much

It can start with a feeling or sometimes a touch

They are normally up, but can also feel down

And their usual smile easily turns to a frown

When it happens to some they can turn very low, their feelings can change and they start to “not know” Is it a bit of depression that they are starting to feel?

They get very touchy, and it's kind of unreal

They raise their voices when speaking to you

They argue and shout, that's what they'll do

It’s not very nice when they get in this state

For them and for others, but by then it's too late

Medication they take, and we know that it works

To relieve the symptoms that really do hurt

To take pills forever are very stark choices

But for most they at least reduce hearing the voices

It can take them some time or it can be quite quick

It can also make them feel sometimes quite sick

I don't understand but I try to be there

Because for those affected it seems very unfair

It can happen to all and the reasons they differ

Some have it easier and others they suffer

Times can be bad and can get really tough

They sometimes feel that they've had more than enough

I know in the past when I’ve felt lonely and sad

And when it happened to me I know I felt bad

I was down for a while but I picked up you see, because I managed to hold on to my dignity.

Volunteers Week

The week of 2nd - 9th June is Volunteers week. It would be foolish to let it go by without acknowledging our own volunteers involved in so many ways: coordinators, committee members, team members, support workers: to ensure the smooth running of Barnsley u3a. at all levels The whole thing works together to provide leadership, communication, diversity and enthusiasm bringing together the Bu3a community. Without our volunteers Bu3a would be reduced in all aspects.

Thank you so much
