Business waste collections

If you run a business in Barnsley, we offer a regular, reliable business waste collection service with competitive rates and fixed-price contracts. We offer separate waste collections for:

  • food waste
  • paper and card
  • dry mixed recycling (metal, glass and plastic)
  • general waste

Collection frequency

You can decide how often your waste is collected depending on your need. We offer weekly, fortnightly or monthly collections for general waste, and fortnightly or monthly collections for paper, card and dry mixed recycling.

Most businesses will need a weekly food waste collection for health and hygiene reasons, but we also offer more frequent collections (eg twice a week). If you only generate a limited amount of food waste, a fortnightly collection may also be available.

Waste containers

You need to have a separate bin for each type of waste being collected. We provide modern, hygienic waste containers in a range of sizes for the different types of waste:

  • food waste: 140 litre and 240 litre
  • paper and card: 240 litre, 360 litre and 1100 litre
  • dry mixed recycling: 240 litre and 360 litre
  • general waste: 140 litre, 240 litre, 360 litre, 660 litre and 1100 litre

Workplace recycling legislation

Workplace recycling legislation requires businesses to separate their waste before it's collected, including that produced by employees, customers and visitors. Regardless of the amount produced, businesses need to separate the following types of waste from their general waste:

  • food waste
  • paper and cardboard
  • glass, plastics and metals

Workplaces that produce any food waste (not only those who serve food or have catering facilities) must have this collected separately.

Workplace recycling rules apply to businesses with 10 or more full-time employees from 31 March 2025, and those with fewer than 10 full-time employees from 31 March 2027.

If your business doesn't comply with recycling regulations

The Environment Agency are taking a pragmatic approach to enforcement of workplace recycling legislation, as they recognise that a transition period is required for both businesses and waste collectors. As long as businesses can evidence they have a plan in place to implement the changes, enforcement action won't be taken against them.

After the transition period, the Environmental Agency may take legal action if your business doesn't store and dispose of waste safely in line with your duty of care. In such instances, the Environment Agency can serve a compliance notice to your business. This must specify the:

  • failures to comply with sections 45AZA or 45AZB
  • steps to be taken to prevent the failure from continuing or recurring
  • period within which those steps must be taken

The timeframe for compliance will depend on what went wrong and the actions needed to fix it. Failure to comply with a compliance notice is an offence and the Environment Agency will consider what action to take in accordance with their enforcement and sanctions policy.
