Proposed variation to the environmental permit at Barnsley Crematorium
The public are invited to comment on the proposed variation to the environmental permit at Barnsley Crematorium.
The updated permit, ref. PPC/B/29/2017/V1, relates to the cremation of human remains at Barnsley Crematorium, Doncaster Road, Ardsley, Barnsley, S71 5EH. It references schedule 5.1 part B(b) 2.1 of the environmental permit regulations. The variation is being made because specific permit conditions required amending.
The site is operated by Barnsley MBC at Barnsley Town Hall, Church Street, Barnsley, S70 2TA.
Summary of proposed changes
We propose to measure the secondary combustion chamber temperature at a single position located towards the mid-point of the chamber. This temperature will be maintained at a level above 800°C at all times.
The minimum oxygen levels given will remain as suggested i.e. 6% average and 3% minimum.
The gas residence time will not be measured or monitored
Emissions to air are expected not to change, which will be demonstrated by annual emissions monitoring reports. In the event of any emission levels exceeding the values given in table 1, an investigation into the possible reasons for the result will take place and a re-test will be arranged as soon as practicable.
Foreseeable changes in emissions
There are no foreseeable changes in emissions. An annual PCDD/F emissions test will be conducted to demonstrate that all the emission limit values given in Table 1 are satisfied.
Exact conditions to be changed
The following conditions are to be changed.
| Section | Proposed amendments |
| 1.6 | New plan shall be provided named PPC/B/29/2025/V1 Plan 1. All reference to PPC/B/29/2017/V1 Plan 1 shall be changed to PPC/B/29/2025/V1 Plan 1 |
| 2.1.1 | Table 1:
|
| 2.2.1 | Table 2: Update Methodologies |
| 2.2.5 | New table 3: Monitoring and Calibration Standards |
| 2.3.8 | Change to Particulate 7.5mg/M³ |
| 2.3.11 | Remove condition:
Every 6 months a report shall be submitted to the Regulator containing the following continuous monitoring data for carbon monoxide. The data shall be submitted covering each period of either 4 weeks or a calendar month;
|
| 3.2.2 | Remove - (at all times)
The gases shall be held at 1073K (800oC) for a minimum (at all times) of 2 seconds in the secondary combustion zone. The residence time shall be determined by direct measurement of the volume rate of the flue gases throughout the cremation cycle at the cremator exit with appropriate corrections made for changes in temperature and oxygen. The concentration of oxygen at the outlet of the secondary combustion zone shall not be less than 6% by volume with a minimum of 3% by volume if measured dry. The term “secondary combustion zone” shall be taken to mean the volume where the above conditions are met. |
