Financial support for foster carers
We know that caring for a child or young person is a wonderful and rewarding experience. We also know that it takes time, dedication, and yes, money.
We are committed to ensuring that our foster carers receive the right financial support to help them positively transform the life of a child. That’s why we’re putting £1.17 million into our fostering fees and allowances every year, to match inflation and the financial needs of our foster carers.

Weekly allowance for the foster carer
As a foster carer, you receive a weekly allowance to cover the costs of caring for a Barnsley child. This allowance is age related and paid for each child placed.
Foster carer allowances are also linked to your skills and experience. Most foster carers start at Skills Level 1, with a minimum allowance of £135 per week. For a Skills Level 2 foster carer, the weekly allowance is £210 per child. With further training and development, carers can progress to Skills Level 3, earning up to £390 per week.

Weekly allowance for the child or young person
We offer an allowance that’s based on the age of the child in your care. This is designed to cover all expenses related to the child’s care. That might include food, transportation, and after school activities.
Jennifer is caring for Jessie, who’s 14 years old. Because of Jessie's age, Jennifer receives a £220 age related allowance as well as £45 to cover age related skills each week.
This means Jennifer earns a total of £400 per week.
Additional financial support
Initial clothing allowance
When a child first comes into your care, they may need a new wardrobe. We provide an initial clothing allowance to ensure the child has everything they need, from everyday wear to school uniforms.
Holiday and festive allowances
Recognising the importance of special occasions, we offer additional allowances during holidays and festive seasons. These funds help foster carers create memorable experiences for the children, ensuring they feel included and celebrated during these special times.
Birthday allowances
Every child deserves to feel special on their birthday. We provide a birthday allowance to help foster carers celebrate the child’s special day with gifts and festivities, creating happy memories that last a lifetime.
Tax relief and benefits
Tax free income
Foster carers in Barnsley benefit from favourable tax conditions. Much of the income earned from fostering is tax-free, thanks to the UK government’s Qualifying Care Relief. This allows foster carers to retain more of their earnings while providing high-quality care.
National insurance credits
Foster carers are eligible for National Insurance credits, which count towards their State Pension. This ensures that carers are not financially disadvantaged in the long term for dedicating their time to fostering.
