Roles working with children in the early years sector
Early years professionals are crucial in helping children develop before starting school. They plan and run education and play activities and make sure the children in their care are safe and happy.

Working in a nursery
Nursery workers help babies and children up to five years old to grow and learn in a safe and supportive setting. As a nursery worker you could:
- plan and supervise activities like art, crafts and music
- help children develop their numeracy and language skills
- keep indoor and outdoor areas clean and safe
- record children's development to share with their parents/carers

Working in an out of school club
Play workers help children and young people to build their physical, social and language skills through play. Working in an out of school club may involve:
- planning and setting up play areas
- leading games and supervising children while they're playing
- supporting children to feel settled and comfortable
- building relationships with parents/carers and other professionals
You can get into this type of job via a college course, an apprenticeship, by volunteering, or applying directly.

Working in a family hub
There are several roles working with children and families in our family hubs including:
- early years practitioner
- engagement officer
- targeted early help practitioner
- assistant gamily hub manager

Childminding
Childminding allows you to work from your own home, providing care and learning opportunities for children. Childminders are self-employed, allowing you to set your own working hours and rates of pay, alongside balancing your work and home life.

Apprenticeships
There are two entry-level early years apprenticeships available:
- level 2 early years practitioner
- level 3 early years educator
Both apprenticeships are suitable for people with no previous experience. Level 2 apprenticeships allow you to work in an early years setting under supervision, supporting the planning and delivery of education and care. Level 3 is more suitable for those who want to plan, organise and lead enriching learning activities, as well as supervise others.
