How organisations can help children and young people to thrive

It's vital that every child and young person experiences an enriched childhood, no matter their background or starting point. Through the Great Childhoods Ambition, we believe that high-quality experiences beyond the classroom are essential in building confidence, nurturing talents and broadening horizons, enabling children and young people to raise their aspirations and take their best next step into education, employment or training.

There are many ways your organisation can work with us to support children and young people across Barnsley. You might choose to work directly with young people, collaborate with schools and colleges, or partner with us alongside other local organisations. There is also the opportunity to become a strategic partner within the Great Childhoods Ambition programme, helping to shape long‑term opportunities and impact.

What involvement could look like

Your organisation could support children and young people by:

  • Delivering workshops and talks that share real‑world experiences and career pathways.
  • Supporting careers events and fairs, such as the Barnsley Digital Symposium, helping young people understand local employment opportunities.
  • Working with schools and colleges to create meaningful encounters with employers, including workplace visits, project challenges or mock interviews.
  • Collaborating with partners to develop new opportunities for children, young people and families, particularly those who may not otherwise access enrichment activities.
  • Becoming a strategic partner and helping to support the future funding and sustainability of the Great Childhoods Ambition.

Benefits for your organisation

As well as making a positive difference for children and young people, involvement brings clear benefits for organisations, including:

  • Supporting the personal and professional development of your staff, through volunteering opportunities.
  • Helping to inspire and develop future talent, building awareness of your sector and organisation among young people.
  • Strengthening your corporate social responsibility and demonstrating a commitment to your local community.
  • Building valuable relationships with schools, colleges and partner organisations across Barnsley.
