In 2025 the Great Childhoods Ambition sponsored three schools to take part in the North Star Science School - a proud milestone for the borough.
North Star 2025 brought together Amazelab, Barnsley Civic, PitStop Productions, and Barnsley secondary schools to co‑create an inspiring workshop blending science, technology, and the arts. Thirty year 10 and 11 students collaborated with industry partners to design a 30‑minute session, which they went on to deliver nine times to more than 450 year 8 and 9 students at Gulliver’s Valley.
Throughout the day, students grew in confidence, developing strong facilitation and communication skills. Four more Barnsley schools attended with their year 8 and 9 students, showcasing the enthusiasm and talent across the borough.

Feedback from schools highlighted the impact of the experience. Students enjoyed every stage of the project - from the first visit to Barnsley Civic to presenting their final work - and valued seeing classroom learning come to life, especially through real‑world applications of topics like light filters.
Learners also thrived when working independently, meeting new people, and stepping outside their comfort zones. The experience was inclusive, meaningful, and left schools eager to participate again in the future.
