About Age-friendly Barnsley

'Age-friendly' is a World Health Organisation concept. In Barnsley we’ve joined the UK network of age-friendly communities as we want everyone in our borough to enjoy healthy and active ageing - living in their own homes and doing the activities they love for as long as safely possible.

We’re working with the Centre For Ageing Better and our local partners to make all our communities age-friendly. Through our Take a Seat Barnsley campaign we're providing places to sit and rest in locations around the borough, to encourage people to get out and about, explore and socialise.

Age-friendly Employer Pledge

We've signed the Age-friendly Employer Pledge, a nationwide programme for employers who recognise the importance and value of older workers and are committed to improving work for people in their 50s and 60s (and beyond).

Take a Seat Barnsley is celebrated at The House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee

Age Friendly Barnsley’s ‘Take A Seat’ campaign was recognised as the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee starts their inquiry into healthy ageing.

Dr Carole Easton OBE, Chief Executive of the Centre for Ageing Better, named the scheme as an example of best practice for increasing physical activity among older people.

Led by Sir Chris Whitty, the inquiry is exploring the importance of maximising independence and reducing time spent in poor health for older adults.

Our ‘Take A Seat’ campaign shows how we can work together to provide suitable resting places to encourage older people to get out, socialise and explore our wonderful borough.

The location, design and size of the seating vary, including urban and rural areas, communities and shops. Browse our interactive map of the different seats.

The Resilient Communities team would like to thank colleagues in Public Rights of Way, Parks, Area Teams, The Glass Works and other stakeholders whose collaborative approaches have helped make this scheme possible in Barnsley.

This initiative also connects to other valuable programmes, such as the Barnsley Older People Physical Activity Alliance (BOPPAA) and the Active in Barnsley Partnership, all aiming to help older people improve their mobility, strength, balance and independence.

Let’s continue showing how Barnsley leads the way!

Members of the golf club have donated to fund the scheme and golf club staff prepare the food. Age UK Barnsley’s staff and volunteers then deliver the meals to the happy recipients.
