Request to add or change a property name
You can apply to add or change the name of a house or commercial building. The name can only be used in addition to the existing number, not as an alternative. The name will be recorded on an informal basis only, and on all official documents the number will still be present.
For commercial premises, changing a property name is for the building name only - not the name of the business. If you need to update the name of your business, find out how to change your details for business rates.
Who can apply
You can apply to add or change the name of a property if you're the legal owner or have permission from them to request it.
Fees
The fee to add or change a property name is £70.
Names that can't be used
The name for your property can't sound or read similar to that of any other existing property within the same postcode area. This is to prevent any confusion for emergency services who may have to visit either property.
Properties also can't be named after a person, either living or deceased.
How to apply
You can apply to add or change a property name by filling in our online form.
What happens next
It can take six to eight weeks to process your application. We process these on a first come first served basis and are unable to prioritise specific applications.
We'll contact you to let you know when the name for you property has been added/changed.
