Vehicle pollution

Sitting in your car with the engine running is noisy and damages the environment unnecessarily.

Smoke and fumes that come from vehicle exhausts are harmful to health. They contain chemicals which are toxic and there is no reason that we should be breathing those fumes into our lungs.  It is also a waste of fuel and can damage your engine.  If you are stopped for more than 10 seconds switch off your engine.

If you are concerned about an idling vehicle close to your property or place of work, we may be able to investigate it as a nuisance complaint.

Please contact Regulatory Services for further information if you believe you have a problem relating to idling vehicles.

You can report lorries and buses that are extremely smoky to the VOSA Smoky Vehicle Hotline on 08706 060 440 or by using the smoky vehicle reporting form on the VOSA website.

Exhaust emission testing is now part of the routine inspection when you take your car in for its MOT test. The Barnsley Council MOT Test Station is open to the general public for testing vehicles.
