Wood burning stoves and open fires
Many people think that wood burning stoves are more environmentally friendly than gas appliances, but they can emit more pollution into the air.
The whole of Barnsley is designated as a smoke control area, so if you have a wood burning stove you must make sure it's an exempt appliance and you only burn approved fuels.
If you don't comply with the legislation, you could be fined up to £1000.
Guidance
You can read guidance about making the most use of your wood burning stove to save you fuel, money, reduce air pollution and comply with the law in Defra's guide to open fires and wood burning stoves and Burnright's getting it right guide.
