A total of £20.4 million investment is being made in Barnsley’s highway network in 2023/24.
The main Highways Capital Programme of £18.4 million was approved by Cabinet on 5 April 2023.
An additional £2 million Principal Roads and Side Streets Programme follows approval in the 2023/24 council budget. Senior highways officers have proposed improvements to carriageways and footways at more than 50 locations across the borough.
This will see work completed in all 21 council wards, and you can see all the works scheduled this year below.
Types of surface treatment
Highway and footway improvements include different treatments used as appropriate following an assessment by highways engineers.
Resurface
Resurfacing is a road maintenance technique. It involves the removal of the top layer of a road surface and replacing it with a new layer.
Surface dress
Surface dressing is a cost-effective road maintenance technique that involves applying a thin layer of bitumen and stone chippings to the surface of a road. Sometimes it is necessary to fill in deeper potholes and defects first, before this process is completed. This is known as patching.
Retread
Retread is a recycling process which reconstructs the entire carriageway surface to a depth of 75mm, recycling the existing carriageway surface without having to remove it from site.
Overlay
This involves laying a new surface over the existing road surface. This is sometimes done when the existing structure is suitable and the kerbs are high enough.
Micro asphalt
Micro asphalt surface treatment is a preventative maintenance treatment. This is used to seal the existing road surface and help to improve the texture of the road. Micro asphalt involves applying a base and top layer of slurry to the existing road surface. This treatment acts as a liquid when first applied, but quickly dries ready for traffic movement.
Potholes
When we carry out repairs to potholes, these are temporary repairs to remove the immediate hazard. These and any subsequent repairs will continue until the road is due for a more permanent repair through our Highways Capital Programme. Locations
The below locations, listed by ward, are included in the £18.4 million Highways Capital Programme or the additional £2 million Principal Roads and Side Streets Programme. The additional Principal Roads and Side Streets works are marked with a *.
The Highways Capital Programme includes other works not included in the following list. This includes:
- bridges and structures works
- road safety schemes
- accessibility improvements
- active travel schemes
- road sign improvements
- safety barrier replacements
This schedule may be subject to change. A number of factors can impact scheduled works. These may include weather issues, emergency or urgent works taking priority, supply chain issues, works by other groups including utilities, and other major projects. Some treatments can only be completed at certain times of year. The programme does include some works carried over from last year.
