Darton active travel route

Project overview

we want feedback from people who live, work, and visit Darton and Mapplewell. We're working on proposals to improve active travel links around the area.

The Darton Active Travel Route (DATR) is a package of measures. It seeks to improve active travel infrastructure between Jebb Lane and Bar Lane bridge.

At the route’s most eastern point, Bar Lane bridge, the scheme would link with the soon to be constructed A61 Active Travel Scheme. This offers active travel to nearby villages, the town centre, and the wider active travel network.

The proposed scheme will be funded mainly through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS). Due to certain funding provisions, the scheme is expected to be delivered in three phases.

Proposals

The main feature proposed by the DATR is the construction of a shared use active travel route. This would be built between Jebb Lane and Bar Lane.

Phase 1

The pavement along the south of Bar Lane would be widened and resurfaced. It'll be between it's junctions with Wentworth Road and Wakefield Road.

Phase 2

Station Road and the disused rail track (south of Darton Lane) would be widened (where possible) and resurfaced. Uncontrolled crossing points would be installed along Station Road to improve access. The disused rail track would be resurfaced with a sealed surface for better all-weather use.

Phase 3

On the western section of the route between Jebb Lane and Darton Station, the existing paths through Longfields would be widened, resurfaced and formalised. This will aim to enable greater usage and access. The route will take users around the M1 Junction 38 roundabout and along Huddersfield Road. We'll widen and resurface pavements where possible. It'll offer improved travel to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Further works

The DATR may also improve the routes that connect with it. This will improve links between residential areas, local amenities, and the active travel network. For example, the allotment lands off Hope Street may have a formal footpath created. This will link to a path leading to Maythorne Close, Cloverlands Drive, and onto Bar Lane. These elements could also include a route through to Staincross Common. It allows a connection into Mapplewell town centre. These extra works are all subject to further investigation and may not be fully deliverable. Future consultation will take place on extra works as the main scheme develops.

The Scheme will have:

  • A route which consists of on and off-road elements, built to local transport note (LTN) 1/20 standards
  • Improvements to pedestrian crossings
  • Wayfinding signage
  • Improvements to public realm
  • Resurfacing of existing sections of the routes.

All proposals are subject to change - the order in which each phase is delivered may also change.

Projected timeline

The table below shows the proposed key milestones that we're currently working towards. They're subject to change - a final activity table will be published in due course.

Activity Date
Construction of Phase 1 and Phase 2 March 2023 to May 2023
Secure funding for Phase 3 August 2023
Construction of Phase 3 October 2023 to March 2024
