Our physical education (PE) continued professional development schedule offers school staff the ability to expand their knowledge and skills in PE which they can then use as part of their teaching.

A practical workshop designed to equip staff with the confidence and competence to deliver high-quality physical education lessons and extracurricular activities in primary schools.

Whether you're new to teaching hockey or have years of experience, this non-assessed workshop will level up your skills and ensure your lessons are fun and engaging for all students.

Staff will:

  • Understand the benefits of teaching hockey, including its gender-neutral and accessible nature.
  • Learn practical solutions for common challenges like equipment and safety.
  • Receive a 6-week plan of fun, introductory games you can use in PE or extracurricular sessions.
  • Discover how to adapt games to build broader skills such as teamwork and resilience.
  • Connect games to specific curriculum aims, ensuring every activity has a clear purpose.
  • Get tips on next steps and additional resources to continue your professional development.

Gymnastics A practical training session delivered by Gary Kirby (British Gymnastics Coach), aimed at developing staff knowledge and understanding of core gymnastics skills for KS1 and KS2.

Staff will build confidence and competence in delivering gymnastics lessons, gain insight into key skills and actions, and learn how to effectively use equipment and space to support safe and engaging sessions.

Tennis

This is a 2-hour training course for primary teachers and teaching assistants, which has been developed by teachers to help you deliver high-quality PE lessons with confidence. The focus is on movement skills and physical literacy, as well as personal development and character education.

Teachers from schools that haven’t previously completed the course will receive a £250 voucher for equipment or follow-on team teaching support. If a teacher from a school has previously attended, and activated their first voucher in 2020, 2021 or 2022, then there is a second voucher available which will have a value of £150 which can be redeemed against 5 hours of team teaching with an LTA Accredited Coach or equipment from the Zsig schools’ collection.

Inclusion in PE

Ensuring Every Child Can Participate, Progress, and Enjoy

Delivered by the Lead Inclusion School for South Yorkshire, Jill Newbolt and Katie Crowley, will equip staff with the knowledge, confidence, and practical strategies to deliver high-quality inclusive physical education where all pupils regardless of ability, need, or background can take part meaningfully and experience success.

Staff will:

  • Understand what inclusion looks like in a PE context and why it matters.
  • Identify barriers to participation and implement strategies to remove or reduce them.
  • Confidently adapt activities, equipment, and rules to meet diverse needs.
  • Use inclusive pedagogies that support SEND learners, children with physical difficulties, EAL learners, and those with low confidence.
  • Plan lessons that are accessible, challenging, and enjoyable for all pupils.

Summer Barnsley PE Network meeting An opportunity to hear about local and national updates, participate in structured networking and learn from experts in the PE and School Sport field on a variety of topics.

Attendees will gain up-to-date knowledge on local and national PE and School Sport developments, practical strategies from experts, and opportunities to collaborate. They will also strengthen professional networks and leave confident in applying best practice to enhance PE provision in their schools.

Swimming and water safety (Part 1 theory) A 2.5‑hour CPD session, delivered by Sarah‑Leigh Dudley (Corporate Aquatic Leader), designed to prepare school staff and volunteers to confidently and safely support swimming and water safety lessons. Learn how to work effectively alongside qualified swimming teachers and help pupils meet National Curriculum requirements. An optional, practical pool session will follow on 29th June, giving staff the opportunity to build hands‑on confidence and experience

Rugby

Gallagher Touchline Academy - Free rugby CPD for teachers, including training, lesson plans, and support from Premiership Rugby clubs. No prior experience needed.

Teachers will gain confidence in delivering rugby lessons, develop inclusive PE strategies, and access ready-to-use resources supported by Premiership Rugby clubs.

Sessions include:

  • A virtual kick off call
  • An in-person training session delivered at Gallagher Premiership Rugby clubs (closest - Sale Sharks)
  • A 6-week lesson plan
