Cycle lanes

Cycle lanes are dedicated lanes running alongside the road, designed to give cyclists the space to travel safely, without getting in the way of other traffic. They're indicated clearly by road signs and markings.

There are many cycle lanes already in place across the borough and we consider the need for new ones as part of our overall plan for future road improvement schemes; wherever feasible, we'll introduce them as part of any new road developments.

Cycle routes

We provide cycle routes to keep cyclists safe and to encourage more people to make their journey by bike. Routes can include cycle lanes on roads, or off-road tracks, which are often shared with pedestrians.

Let's Ride

Let's Ride includes hundreds of cycle routes, all accredited by British Cycling.

For each route you can read a description, download a free map, and upload the route to a compatible GPS cycle computer if you have one.


Sustrans is a charity that aims to make it easier for people to walk and cycle, and encourages travel which is healthier for people, their communities, and the environment. Working with hundreds of partners they set up the National Cycle Network in 1995. You can find lots of cycling and walking routes that form part of the National Cycle Network on the Sustrans website.

Trans Pennine Trail

Most of the cycle routes along the Trans Pennine Trail are off-road, with more than half being traffic free. Most of these cycle paths are flat and suitable for riders of all levels. Visit the Trans Pennine Trail website to find cycle route maps, tips and details of where you can hire a bike.

Ride the Routes

Ride the Routes shows the cycle routes that were part of the Tour de Yorkshire races in 2016 and 2015, as well as for the Tour de France Grand Depart in 2014.

Each route includes an interactive map, video footage, and tips and advice for cycling along it.

We manage a number of BMX and bike tracks throughout the borough.
