17/02/2026: Statement on the Town Hall Clock
Cllr Robin Franklin, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said:
The Town Hall clock has unfortunately stopped working again despite recent major repairs.
"The clock is more than 92 years old and recently had a full rebuild by specialist contractors after it stopped working last year. Due to its age, many parts are no longer readily available, and so several replacement parts had to be specially made.
"The repair and rebuild was complete before Christmas. An extended period of testing was carried out before the mechanism was installed back in the clock tower. The mechanism worked perfectly under testing for a full month, from 4 January to 4 February, when it was finally installed again and appeared to be working.
"Unfortunately it stopped again last week, and our specialist contractors have been contacted to diagnose and repair the issue as soon as possible.
"We know the Town Hall is a treasured landmark to local people and we thank everyone for their patience while we get this iconic clock repaired and for the long term.
