Anyone who handles waste must take all reasonable steps to make sure it's managed properly. Handling includes producing, importing, keeping, storing, transporting, treating or disposing of it. Duty of care regulations apply to households, businesses, and to those who transport waste.

Register as a waste carrier

Businesses must register for a waste carrier licence with the Environment Agency if they:

  • transport waste
  • buy, sell or dispose of waste
  • arrange for someone else to buy, sell or dispose of waste

If you don't register you could get an unlimited fine.

How to check if a waste carrier has a licence

Before giving your waste to anybody you should always ask for their full name, address, and to see their waste carrier licence. The licence is the size of a credit card, although a paper licence is also issued. The licence number will start with the letters 'CBU'.

You should check the waste carrier's licence number on the Environment Agency website to make sure they're licensed before giving them your waste. If they aren't, refuse their service.

Report an unlicensed waste carrier

If you know or suspect that someone is operating as an unlicensed waste carrier, you can report them to us.
