The Roses Remember

This November, Barnsley will come together to honour the service and sacrifice of those who have served in the Armed Forces through a unique remembrance initiative, The Roses Remember.

Running from Saturday 7 November to Saturday 14 November 2006, the project will transform the Yorkshire Roses in the Seam into a powerful act of remembrance.

At the heart of the project will be a whispered audio experience featuring the names of more than 2000 people commemorated on war memorials and honour rolls across the borough.

The names of Barnsley's fallen will be softly whispered through the illuminated roses, which will be lit red to represent poppies, creating a poignant tribute to those from Barnsley who gave their lives in service to their country.

The first showing of The Roses Remember is Saturday 7 November 2026 at 6.30pm.

From Sunday 8 November to Saturday 14 November 2006, you can experience this act of remembrance. The names of Barnsley's fallen will begin to play, along with a lighting display, at the following times:

Every effort has been made to include all the names of those remembered on war memorials and in honour rolls in Barnsley.

Road closures and restrictions for remembrance events 2026

Sunday 8 November - Barnsley town centre

There will be no stopping or waiting restrictions between 7am and 2pm on Church Street, Eldon Street, George Yard, Market Hill, Midland Street, Regent Street South, Royal Street, Sadler Gate and St Mary's Gate.

There will be full road closures between 7am and 2pm (as required, some closures may be for a shorter duration) on Cheapside, Church Street, Eldon Street, George Yard, Hanson Street, Kendray Street, Market Hill, Market Street, May Day Green, Midland Street, New Street, Peel Square, Queen Street, Regent Street South, Royal Street, Sadler Gate, Shambles Street, St Mary's Gate, St Mary's Place and The Arcade.

Sunday 8 November - Dodworth

There will be a road closure on High Street between 10:30am and 12pm.

Sunday 8 November - Grimethorpe

There will be road closures on Brierley Road, Cemetery Road, High Street, Kingsway and St Luke's Road between 9:15am to 9:45am and 10:30am to 12pm.

Sunday 8 November - Hoyland

There will be road closures on High Street, King Street, Kirk Balk, Southgate and West Street between 10:30am and 12:30pm

Sunday 8 November - Mapplewell

There will be a road closure on Blacker Road between 10:30am and 11:45am.

Sunday 8 November - Monk Bretton

There will be road closures on Cross Street, High Street and Well Lane between 10am and 12pm.

Sunday 8 November - Penistone

There will be road closures on Back Lane, Church Street, High Street, Market Place, Market Street, Park Avenue, Schole Avenue, Shrewsbury Road and St Mary's Street between 10am and 12pm.

Sunday 8 November - Silkstone

There will be a road closure on Martin Croft between 10:15am and 11:30am.

Sunday 8 November - Thurgoland

There will be road closures on Cote Lane, Halifax Road and Smithy Hill between 10:45am and 11:15am.

Wednesday 11 November - Barnsley town centre

There will be no stopping or waiting restrictions and full road closures between 7am and 2pm on Church Street, Royal Street, Sadler Gate and St Mary's Gate.
