Barnsley's first Carers Roadshow proves a hit with our caring communities

In June, we hosted Barnsley’s first Carers Roadshow, helping people caring for loved ones in our communities get the support they need.

Organised by Barnsley Healthcare Federation and Barnsley Council, our town centre event proved a big hit. Over 450 people joined us on the day to celebrate our unpaid carers and learn more about local support.

We were delighted to see stalls packed throughout the day to speak to local organisations and charities. This helped us share practical advice, support and information with carers.

A first of its kind for Barnsley and Yorkshire, the event was also a great way for us to hear from our carers about their experiences. This will help us shape our support for the future.

We had some amazing feedback from the event. Local carers told us it was a ‘brilliant event’ and it had ‘made their day’. It was also great to hear how supported they felt after our Roadshow, which is a key ambition driving our Carers Strategy.

With the event proving a hit with our communities, we’re excited to announce we’ll be bringing it back next year. We’ll share more information about our next Carers Roadshow in the new year.

James Barker, Chief Executive at Barnsley Healthcare Federation, said: “Barnsley’s unpaid carers are unsung heroes in our communities, so it was great to shine a light on the incredible work they do at our Carers Roadshow. The event showed how passionate we are about working together in Barnsley to support our caring community.

“We got to hear from carers during the day about their experiences, helping us to look at how we can continue developing our support to meet their needs. I hope carers found the day as valuable as we did and are excited to see it return next year.”

Councillor Jo Newing, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Adult Social Care, said: “We want to be ambitious in our plans to support and recognise our borough’s unpaid carers, who play a vital role in our communities. It was great to see carers coming together at our Roadshow to learn more about the support available to them and share their caring experiences with us.

“I would like to thank everyone who was involved in bringing Yorkshire’s first Carers Roadshow to Barnsley and who helped to make it such a success. We hope that the event with go from strength to strength when it returns next year.”
