Congratulations to our GCSE pupils

We’re congratulating our GCSE pupils on their exam results, as we see more of our young people leaving school with five GCSEs of Grade 4 and above, including maths and English, than in 2019.

We’ve seen similar results here to the national picture; they are slightly lower, as marking returned to pre-pandemic standards.

Cllr Trevor Cave, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children’s Services, said: “I’m pleased to announce a greater number of pupils have achieved five GCSE passes including English and maths. This is great news, considering the challenges of the past two years.

“Our GCSE students’ hard work and commitment has clearly paid off. I’d like to congratulate them and wish them well for the future.

“My sincere thanks also go to school staff who are dedicated to helping our young people achieve their potential, as well as the parents and carers who have supported their children to reach their goals.”

Two of the nine ambitions in our Children and Young People’s plan are that children and  young people get a good education, are ambitious and able to reach their potential; and that the council and its partners on the Barnsley Children and Young People’s Trust will work strategically and seamlessly to achieve more and better outcomes for children, young people and families in the borough.

We want Barnsley to be the place of possibilities and that every young person is able to achieve their goals - whether through a placement, higher education, or employment. The Trust is working hard to continue to improve the attainment of Barnsley’s children and young people.

We remain committed to working with all our schools through the Barnsley Schools Alliance to continue to improve the education of every child in the borough.

Support for pupils who did not get the results they had hoped for is available through their schools. The National Careers Service ( also provides information to help young people decide on their next steps, and the exam results helpline can be contacted on 0800 100 900.
