Cooper Prize 2023 Announces Exhibition Shortlist

The Cooper Gallery is delighted to announce shortlisted artists for the Cooper Prize 2023.

They include over one hundred creatives who submitted work to South Yorkshire’s most prestigious art competition.

The winner will be announced at a special ceremony on Friday, 27 October receiving £1,000, sponsored by Oliver Coppard, the Mayor of South Yorkshire, a solo exhibition in 2024 in the Sadler Room at Cooper Gallery  and inclusion in the group exhibition with other shortlisted artists.

The art work will create an exciting in-person show on display in the Gallery from Saturday, 28 October, and will also be part of a virtual exhibition that can be viewed online on the Cooper Gallery website

It was a record-breaking year for entries, and the quality of work made the judging process extremely difficult. Entries came from across the region and as far as Weymouth and included mediums such as ceramics, digital art, oil, pencil, sculptures, and watercolour.

Visitors will get an opportunity to  purchase some pieces of artwork on display and support local established, new, and emerging talent.

Councillor Robin Franklin, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said: “We would like to thank everyone who submitted their work to The Cooper Prize 2023. It is an honour to support local artists and bring together an outstanding collection of work right here in Barnsley, which includes such a vibrant mix of artists. We have no doubt there are big things ahead for these artists and look forward to seeing their careers flourish in the future.”
