Another 11 dual EV chargers which can charge up to 22 vehicles at once have been added to Barnsley Council car parks making charging vehicles even more accessible.  

The council’s Sustainability and Climate Change Team has overseen the work, which takes the total number of chargers in council car parks across the borough to 32. All are dual chargers, creating a total of 64 charging spaces.

When adding other private-sector providers, there are now well over 100 EV charging spaces listed across Barnsley on the popular EV charging map service Zapmap.

The newest chargers have been installed at:

• Church Street Car Park, Darton (2 dual 7kW chargers)
• Mark Street Car Park, Barnsley (3 dual 7kW chargers)
• Market Gate Car Park, Barnsley (3 dual 7kW chargers, 1 rapid 50kW charger)
• West Road Car Park, Pogmoor (2 dual 7kW chargers)

The new chargers have been funded through South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and the Get Building Fund. The chargers in Barnsley are part of a wider £1.8m investment which is adding more than 100 chargers across South Yorkshire.

Cllr James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said: “We all have a part to play in helping Barnsley to be net zero carbon by 2045, protecting our borough for future generations.

“I’m delighted that we’re able to offer even more electric vehicle charging spaces at car parks across our borough. These are available both to those visiting our town centre and local high streets, as well as local residents who want to use them to charge overnight.

“We’re helping to grow the EV charging infrastructure across South Yorkshire and encourage more people to make the switch to electric vehicles when it’s time to change their car.

“We know more and more people are already making the switch to electric vehicles. This helping us improve our air quality and reduce our carbon emissions as we build the cleaner, greener and more sustainable Barnsley we can all be proud to call home.”

The new chargers are easy to use, with instructions and payment details provided at each site. Each charge point has a QR code on it to scan with a smartphone for online payment or to download an app. You can download the EB Go! App for Apple and for Android in advance. Users without smartphones can pay by calling the phone number on the machine.
