Temporary closures at some of our household waste recycling centres

We're carrying out a programme of planned drainage improvement works at a number of our household waste recycling centres over the coming months. This is to help protect the environment and improve site safety.

Sites with planned closures

The following sites have planned full closures. Ahead of each closure, there will be a three-day transition period where some waste containers are removed from the site in preparation for the works. During the transition period, please check the site is still accepting the waste you're disposing of before visiting.

Exact closure and reopening dates will be confirmed and published once the improvement programme timetable has been finalised.

The site currently closed is Smithies.

Closure update

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the drainage works at Smithies are taking longer than planned and the site will remain closed for a while longer. In the meantime, please continue to use a different recycling centre and thank you for your patience.

Whilst Smithies is closed, the nearest alternative site is Worsbrough.

To reduce waiting times at Worsbrough, the winter opening hours will be temporarily extended. From Thursday 1 October the Worsbrough site will be open from 8am until 5pm.

When Smithies reopens, the Worsbrough opening hours will return to the standard winter opening times of 8am to 4pm.

The best time to visit any of our sites is before 11am and after 3pm as these are the quieter times

What to do if your nearest recycling centre is closed

There are several alternative ways to dispose of your waste whilst the sites are closed. Please continue to dispose of your waste responsibly.

Visiting an alternative centre

If your nearest recycling centre is closed, you can continue to use our other household waste recycling centres. You can also use recycling centres in Doncaster if that's more convenient.

Due to site closures, the other sites may be busier than usual, including the surrounding roads. Temporary traffic lights will be available on site and will be used when necessary to manage queues and traffic flow on nearby roads safely.

You might also have to wait longer at the alternative sites, so please be patient. The busiest times to visit tend to be on weekends, bank holidays and between 11am and 3pm. Where possible, please visit before 11am and after 3pm which tend to be the quieter parts of the day.

Before travelling, please check the opening times and accepted materials for your chosen site.

Bulky waste collection service

You can use our bulky waste collection service if your items are too big to put in your bin and are on our standard list of items we can collect. This is a good option if you have several large items to dispose of.

Self storage

If you can't get to another site, you could consider safely storing any items that don’t need disposing of immediately until your local site reopens.

All household bin waste and recycling collections will continue as normal throughout the works.
