We do our best to make sure that our website is accessible to everyone. We've made a lot of improvements to it, so that you can use most of our services online and find things easily.

Our website works on PCs, smartphones, tablets and digital TVs. We aim to provide a quick, easy and convenient way to find information, report something, pay a bill or apply for a service. You can visit us online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at a time and in a place to suit you.

Using access keys on our website

Using just your keyboard it's possible to jump between sections of our website to get around. First, you'll need to find your access key(s). These can differ depending on the web browser and operating system you're using as follows:

Check the accessibility features on your device

Making some changes to your device or web browser can make them easier to use.

  • The I can't see very well guide explains how to change the way your computer or web browser works to make it easier to use. It tells you how to change text size, background colours, or make your computer speak to you.
  • AbilityNet is a website that has free fact sheets that you can download, such as step-by-step guides to setting up your computer and software.
  • My Web My Way is a BBC website that helppeople make the most of the internet. BBC no longer updates it, but it still contains some useful guides about computers and web browsers.
  • The I can't hear very well guide tells you how to access signed content on BBC iPlayer or find it elsewhere on the internet.  It also shows you how to turn on subtitles if you're watching videos online.
  • The I find a keyboard or mouse hard to use guide gives tips on changing your keyboard settings. This can make your mouse easier to use or allow you to use your computer through touch screen devices.
  • The I find words difficult guide tells you how to change font settings to make text easier to read. You can also find out about spell-checking software and how to make your computer speak aloud.

JavaScript

Some of our digital services need JavaScript technology to work. If you're using screen readers, or special pointing devices other than a mouse, you may not be able to use JavaScript.

We try to avoid using systems that need JavaScript. Sometimes we rely on third party products that do use Javascript. Where we do, we'll give you the option to access services offline by giving you contact details for the service or for our contact centre.

Help to get online

There's lots of support available to help you get online - from local one-to-one sessions about using a tablet or computer, to training courses where you can gain a qualification.

Free digital skills support

Our digital champions run sessions for anyone who needs more confidence using their device or accessing our services on the web.

You can get one-to-one help to access council services online at our free digital sessions, where we can help you with things like filling in our online forms and accessing your Council Tax account. 

If you prefer, you can join one of our free online basics courses which cover all the basics to help you get online - from using a touchscreen to searching the web for information and staying safe online. There's a choice of dates and locations available, and each course runs one day a week for six weeks.

We also work with local community groups to support people to get online, and offer digital volunteering opportunities.

Free computers and wi-fi in libraries

All of our libraries have free computers that you can use for up to 2 hours a day. They also offer free wifi and there's help available to connect your own device if you're wanting to get online. Staff are on hand to show you how to use our website, fill in forms and download the latest eBooks.

Adult skills training courses

Our Adult Skills and Community Learning service offers a wide variety of IT courses, catering for complete beginners through to more advanced learners. Some of the courses are free, or available at a reduced fee if you receive certain benefits. See the full IT and digital skills course listings.

We've made video guides to using some of our online services that you can find below. We'll be adding more in the future, so look out for them on our web pages. If you'd like us to develop more guides to help you to use online services, please let us know.
