Occupational therapy

Community occupational therapy services provide assessments and advice to people who need some help with daily living tasks.

Occupational therapy looks at your overall health - mental, physical and social. It introduces solutions to help you reach your full potential.

We have occupational therapists based in the community who can assess your situation. It will identify the difficulties you're having and help you overcome them. This will be done by offering advice, suggesting different techniques and recommending changes to your environment. Fill in our online referral form if you'd like an assessment.

Occupational therapists can help by:

  • offering you advice on:
    • dressing and personal hygiene
    • preparing a meal or drink for yourself
    • getting on and off a chair, or into and out of bed
  • working with you to find new ways of doing tasks
  • providing specialist equipment, such as a shower chair or a mobile hoist
  • providing minor adaptations, such as grab rails
  • arranging major adaptations, such as ramps and stair lifts
  • referring you to other services that can help, such as care managers or wheelchair services

Finding an occupational therapist

If you're looking for an occupational therapist to provide private treatment or independent advice, check the directory of occupational therapists in independent practice to find someone in your area. All those listed on the directory are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and are members of the specialist section of independent practitioners within the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT). The RCOT website tells you about the role of the occupational therapist and how occupational therapy may benefit you.
