How to pay your council tax

We send you a bill for your council tax in March each year for the financial year ahead (1 April to 31 March). We may also send you a revised bill if your account needs adjusting at any time in the year.

You can sign up for online billing if you’d prefer to receive an electronic bill. To do this please register for a My Bentax account.

You can pay your council tax in full, or in instalments. Your first payment should be paid within 14 days from when we send you the bill.

Watch our video help guides

Watch our council tax and housing benefit video help guides for step-by-step instructions on how to register for a MyBentax account, set up a Direct Debit or make a payment using a debit card.

Pay by Direct Debit

The easiest way to pay your council tax is to set up a Direct Debit. You can do this online by registering for a My Bentax account.

When you've signed up, you'll be able to see your bill details and payments. Direct Debits are collected monthly and you can choose when the payments are collected - on either the 5th, 12th, 18th or 25th of the month. You can choose whether you want to pay over 10 or 12 months.

Pay by debit or credit card

You can pay your bill in instalments by debit or credit card on our pay page. It's your responsibility to ensure you keep up to date with your payments.
