North Star Science School 2026

A creative STEAM opportunity for Year 10

The Seam Opening Low Res 1

Expression of Interest for Barnsley secondary schools

We're inviting Barnsley secondary schools to express interest in taking part in North Star 2026, a creative learning programme designed to inspire young people through hands on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) activity.

North Star brings together schools, artists, technologists and community partners to support pupils to explore creativity, confidence and future pathways through engaging, curriculum linked workshops.

The programme is particularly suited to students in year 10 who benefit from practical, creative approaches to learning and who may not always engage through traditional classroom delivery.

What participation involves

Schools selected for North Star 2026 will benefit from:

  • the opportunity for students to co-create and deliver their own STEAM workshops, supported by Amazelab and industry professionals from Willmott Dixon, a national construction specialist

  • activities that develop confidence, teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills

  • real-world experiences linked to employability, creativity and future aspirations

  • a high quality, inclusive experience aligned with curriculum and enrichment priorities

Previous North Star programmes have seen strong engagement, particularly from students who are quieter, less confident, or at key transition points.

Who the programme is for

North Star 2026 is aimed at:

  • secondary school pupils (recommended age range 12–15)

  • groups who would benefit from confidence building and creative engagement

  • schools seeking innovative enrichment, careers linked learning or STEAM provision

No specialist equipment or prior experience is required.

Key dates and commitment

Schools must be able to support student participation at the following:

  • Yorkshire Rose sculptures and Digital Media Centre site visit in Barnsley Town Centre on Wednesday 9 September 2026, 10am to 2pm

How to register

  • understand demand across Barnsley

  • shape delivery around school needs

  • share full programme details once confirmed

To register, please complete our expression of interest form and outline why this opportunity would benefit your students. Expressions of interests will close on Friday 5 June 2026.

Our industry expert panel will review expressions of interests on Monday 9 June 2026  and schools will be notified of the outcomes on Friday 12 June 2026.
