The Primary Careers Hub helps Barnsley primary schools build strong, meaningful careers-related learning from early years to key stage 2.
Part of the Great Childhoods Ambition, the Hub introduces career awareness from a young age, helping children explore possibilities, build confidence, and start to imagine their future.
Free to join, the Hub is flexible and designed around your school’s priorities, building on the great work you already do.
What we offer
We support schools to bring careers learning to life through:
employer engagement - opportunities to connect with local employers and bring real-world experiences into the classroom
curriculum links - practical ways to embed careers across the curriculum, helping children connect learning to life
skills and self-awareness - activities and resources that support children to understand their strengths and develop key skills
challenging stereotypes - access to diverse role models to broaden aspirations and challenge bias from an early age
Schools are supported through a combination of one-to-one meetings, shared resources, and termly community of practice sessions, creating space to collaborate, share ideas, and learn from others across the borough.
How it works
The Hub is designed to be supportive and collaborative, fitting around your school’s existing approach.
We will:
work with you to review your current offer
help identify gaps and opportunities
support you to develop a clear plan for careers-related learning
What schools commit to
To get the most from the hub, we ask schools to:
nominate a lead teacher as the main point of contact
take part in one-to-one support meetings to review provision and agree priorities
join community of practice sessions (three per year) to share learning and resources with other schools
Why this matters
Early exposure to careers is powerful. By the age of six, many children have already formed ideas and stereotypes about the jobs available to them.
Through the Primary Careers Hub, we work with a growing network of employers who are passionate about changing this and helping children see a wider world of opportunities and inspiring them to aim high.
Employer ACE Partitions and Ceilings said:
“It’s really important that children gain knowledge about different careers early on… so they can make links between their own interests and possible career choices.”
