Mobile signal strength and coverage

Good mobile phone signal is essential so we can get online and stay connected, whether for work, leisure, or when we're on the move.

As part of the South Yorkshire mobile coverage mapping project, the signal strength for each of the UK's main mobile network providers has been collected and mapped across Barnsley, providing an online tool where you can check the quality of your mobile signal.

The map shows detailed signal strength for EE, O2, Three and Vodafone. Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) such as giffgaff, Tesco Mobile and VOXI, still use one of these main networks. Check which main network your MVNO uses.

The map allows you to select each mobile network to see their quality of coverage at street level, rated either as:

  • good
  • acceptable
  • essential
  • poor

You can also search by entering your address to find the download and upload speeds recorded for each of the providers at that location.

How data for the map was collected

Mobile signal strength data was collected by installing devices into waste collection vehicles, to gather street level data as they travelled on their daily routes.

The South Yorkshire Digital Infrastructure team led the project, alongside Streetwave - a company which provides detailed mobile network coverage maps down to household level.

Reporting problems with mobile coverage

If you're having problems with your mobile coverage or signal strength, you should contact your mobile network provider.
