Barnsley Regent Street, Church Street and Market Hill conservation area appraisal and management plan draft consultation 2024

We'd like your views on a draft conservation area appraisal for the town centre.

The first consultation was carried out in September 2023. From this we gained useful data and insights both from the online survey and two in-person events. We now have a second draft that we'd like your feedback on.

The current extent of the conservation area can be found on the Regent Street, Church Street and Market Hill map.

At the moment the town centre conservation area doesn't have an appraisal or a management plan. We intend to consult on a draft management plan soon. When adopted, these will be a useful resource for the conservation and management of the area. They will also be looked at as part of the planning process for any proposals in the area.

How you can submit your comments

The consultation runs from Friday 9 February to Friday 22 March 2024.

You can submit your comments through our online survey.

You can also comment in person at our event on Saturday 17 February 2024 at the Cooper Gallery, from 10.30am to 2pm.

Background to the plan

The Eldon Street High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) project is one of 68 HSHAZ schemes across the country. It's funded by Historic England and Barnsley Council. Its aim is to help restore and refresh the historic buildings on the west side of Eldon Street. The project is due to end in March 2024. All major works such as the Civic and 18 Eldon Street will continue until this date.

The conservation area appraisal and management plan have been funded by the Eldon Street HSHAZ. This will be a key legacy document from the project.
