Why choose us?
We're an award-winning council serving around 227,000 people in South Yorkshire. Working together, we aim to make Barnsley a better place for everyone who lives in the borough.
We're a lean council, with a shared vision, a renewed sense of direction and a collaborative, people-first culture. We call it Future Council, and it's already producing results: higher-performing schools, increased investment, more local jobs and a revitalised town centre. It’s a bold strategy - one we’re all committed to – whatever our individual profession. You can take a look at our vision and values.
We’re working as a council to make Barnsley a great place to live, work, invest and visit, through Town Spirit.
Pride of place - our people
Many diverse talents, backgrounds, personalities and cultures come together to make Barnsley a great place to live, work and visit; from teachers and carers, to surveyors, accountants, HR specialists, refuse collectors and gardeners. The variety of roles on offer is immense and so is the difference each one of us makes to the communities we serve.
Together, we’re constantly refocusing and refining the services we offer; empowering the communities we serve in a challenging, changing environment. We’re building a thriving, vibrant economy while developing as an organisation that prioritises learning and enables people to reach their potential.
If you work for Barnsley Council, you'll be contributing to our vision to work together for a brighter future, a better Barnsley.

What our employees think
The people here really care about doing their best for Barnsley. We’re always looking for ways to improve – but not for profit. The services we deliver are about helping people to live healthy, happy lives.
I get along with everyone on the team and we have a good sense of humour. Plus, it makes me feel good to know that I have made someone happy by cleaning up their garden or property. I feel very proud knowing I help the general public.
Every day is different; fast paced and filled with new challenges and changing processes. I’ve worked here for seven years and the council seems like a different organisation – we have strong leaders, clear direction and engaged people.
I enjoy the variety of my work. My role is forever evolving as the council improves. I also feel like I have a direct impact, in how we adapt the service and on my local area. I like having flexi time too and, having commuted for many years, I love working locally.
