Search, view or comment on planning applications

When someone applies for planning permission, we publish details of the application online to give interested parties a chance to view and comment on them.

We may also post notices near to the site where the proposed work will take place, or write to those who live along the boundaries of the site. For large scale developments we'll also advertise them in the local newspaper.

Viewing planning applications online

You can search and view planning applications and their supporting documents on Planning Explorer. New applications are usually available to view online within five working days of the date we've received the full and valid application. You can also view planning applications on a map.

Planning Explorer terms of use

By accessing and using Planning Explorer you're agreeing that you've read, understood and will abide by the following terms of use.

Acceptable behaviour

Planning Explorer is open to members of the general public. Users should refrain from making any comments that could be viewed as malicious, as this could result in action being taken against the user. Submissions containing such comments will be removed from the site.

Disclaimer

We take no responsibility for any errors or omissions in the planning details obtained from Planning Explorer. The details contained within Planning Explorer does not constitute in any way a formal notification of a planning decision. As such, any actions taken as a result of information displayed on the site are undertaken entirely at the viewer's own risk.

In using the system you agree to exempt Barnsley Council from any liability in respect of any actions, suits, claims costs, expenses, damages and demands whatsoever in respect of any documents obtained via this website.

Copyright

Plans, drawings and material submitted to Barnsley Council are protected by the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, section 47. You may only use material which is downloaded for consultation purposes, to compare current applications with previous schemes, and to check whether developments have been completed in accordance with approved plans.

The application details should only be used for your consideration and/or your comments to us. You must not distribute, alter or use any documents for any other purpose.

Further copies must not be made without the prior permission of the copyright owner.

Understanding decisions in Planning Explorer

Planning applications marked with 'D' are those where the decision is delegated to the Assistant Director. Applications marked with 'C' are those that need to be referred to the council's Planning Regulatory Board.

Please note: it is possible that some applications marked as delegated may be referred to the Planning Regulatory Board for a decision.

New applications which aren't yet on Planning Explorer

Any submitted planning applications that are missing from Planning Explorer are invalid applications. These could be applications where we're currently waiting for more details or documents. These applications will be added in the future when the application is registered.

How you can comment on a planning application

We can only accept comments (also called 'representations') on planning applications in writing. You can do this:

If you're submitting comments by email or post, please quote the planning application reference number your comments relate to.

Make sure you've looked at the planning application form, plans, and any supporting documents before making any comments. You should only use the application information for your comments, and not for any other purpose.

When making a comment, you must provide your name and address for us to consider them. Comments marked as 'in confidence' or those submitted anonymously will not be considered, and any comments submitted this way will not be counted as a formal representation.

All comments we receive are made publicly available, so anyone (including the person who applied for the planning permission) can ask to see or copy the comments.

What happens when you've made a comment

Your comments will be passed on to the case officer dealing with the planning application and will be considered as part of the decision-making process. It's not possible for us to acknowledge or respond to individual representations directly, so please consider any automatic response as your acknowledgement we've received it.

When considering comment we'll only take into account planning matters, such as the effect of the proposal on the enjoyment of your home or garden, on the appearance of the surrounding area, and on highway safety. We won't take into account matters such as the effect of the proposal on individual property values, ownership disputes, or issues covered by other legislation.

When a decision on the application has been made, this will be published on Planning Explorer.

Other stakeholder comments

As well as asking the public for their views on planning applications, we also invite relevant stakeholders, interested groups, and statutory and non-statutory consultees to comment on them.

Statutory consultees

Statutory consultees are organisations and bodies who must be consulted on relevant planning applications. They include the Environment Agency, Natural England, English Heritage and National Highways.

Other bodies include local highway and planning authorities, and organisations with very specific interests, such as the Theatres Trust.

Non-statutory consultees

Non-statutory consultees are organisations and bodies identified in national planning policy who should be consulted on relevant planning applications. These include some bodies who are also statutory consultees (for example English Heritage and English Nature), and others that aren't - such as the police architectural liaison officers.
