Surrounded with beautiful countryside and with a charm all its own, Cudworth has a bustling town centre clustered around its attractive High Street.
You can grab a cuppa with a friend, stock up on household essentials or pick up a gift for someone special. The town’s proud community spirit shines through its many volunteer and social groups.

There are loads of walking routes in Cudworth and the surrounding area, with the Trans Pennine Trail cutting through the town. Carlton Marsh Nature Reserve is on the doorstep and the Cudworth Faces stone carvings at Storrs Mill Wood make for a fascinating visit. There are plenty of interesting landmarks and locations, including the roman bridge and Cudworth Park.

England cricketer Darren Gough, footballers David Hirst and Ralph O’Donnell and Olympic ice hockey player Archibald Stitchcombe are among the famous names linked to Cudworth. Sprinter Dorothy Hyman, who won silver and bronze at the Olympics, is honoured in the name of Cudworth’s Dorothy Hyman Stadium. The late chat show host and journalist Sir Michael Parkinson was born in Cudworth.

Businesses and people living in Cudworth helped us draw up a new Town Investment Plan. We’re working on plans for the next phase of the Principal Towns and Local Centres Programme. We'll engage with local people on the next steps of this process.

Cudworth Town centre masterplan and public engagement

We're developing exciting plans for the next phase of Cudworth’s town centre regeneration under our Principal Towns and Local Centres Programme.

We’ve drawn up a new draft masterplan focussed on improving public spaces helping our businesses and community to thrive and giving everyone a safe and pleasant shopping experience, 

New urban park

We have plans for a new urban park at the top end of the high street on Barnsley Road on the site currently occupied by the row of buildings known as The Crescent which are in poor repair and largely unoccupied. We plan to demolish this row of buildings to make way for the new urban park. This will then be somewhere we can all meet, relax and unwind - a haven at the heart of the high street.

There will be appealing landscaped areas which we aim to involve the local community in planting, as well as attractive paving, seating and an ornamental feature/clock tower. These plans are subject to funding and planning approval and legal agreements.

We're now inviting people to view and comment on our wider masterplan for Cudworth town centre. This plan will build on the work of the Town Centre Investment Plan presented to Cabinet in 2022, which was developed in consultation with local people.

We’re holding two public engagement events where you can see some of the design concepts used in the plan, as well as the sites we're aiming to improve.

The drop-in events will be held at the newly-refurbished Cudworth Library, Roberts Street, Cudworth, Barnsley S72 8UQ at these times:

• Monday 8 December from 9am to 12:30pm
