An abnormal load is a large load that needs to be transported along our road network. It's usually something that meets one or more of the following conditions:

• a weight of more than 44,000 kilograms

• an axle load of more than 10,000 kilograms for a single non-driving axle and 11,500 kilograms for a single driving axle

• a width of more than 2.9 metres

• a rigid length of more than 18.65 metres

Abnormal loads are usually moved by specialist hauliers.

Who you need to notify about moving an abnormal load

If you intend to transport an abnormal load on a route within the borough, you may need to give advance warning (depending on the load you're moving and your route) to:

• Barnsley Council (as the highways authority)

• bridge and structure owners, like National Highways and Network Rail

• South Yorkshire Police, for approval and to provide an escort where necessary

Check the notification time requirements to make sure you allow enough time to get the necessary clearance to move your load.

How to notify the appropriate authorities

You can notify the relevant authorities about moving an abnormal load using the Electronic Service Delivery for Abnormal Loads (ESDAL) system on the National Highways website.

You can also fill in our online form and include the following information:

• the weight and size of the load

• how many axles it’s being carried on

• the route you're travelling 

• when you’re transporting it

When we receive your notification

When we receive your notification we'll check any proposed route to make sure it's suitable for abnormal loads. If we need to check a bridge or other structure, or remove any street furniture for the abnormal load to pass through, there may be a charge.
