A635 active travel scheme

Project overview

Barnsley Council, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and their partners are proposing a series of walking and cycling improvements in a scheme called A635 active travel scheme. The project is part of the Sheffield City Region Active Transforming Cities Fund (TCF). Barnsley Council has secured over £13m of this central government funding, with £2.136m allocated to this project.

The A635 active travel link scheme is a package of measures which seeks to promote walking and cycling connectivity on the A635 between Stairfoot Roundabout and Hollygrove Roundabout in Goldthorpe.

For our scheme, we have assessed the key issues which include some major deficiencies in the quality and amenity of infrastructure for non-motorised users along the A635 area. Specific issues include:

  • Lack of off-road 'safe' cycle routes
  • Poor quality physical infrastructure that doesn’t facilitate cyclists, such as inaccessible and unsafe crossings
  • Lack of linkages to other routes
  • Poor connections between residential areas and local amenities
  • Lack of signposted cycle routes
  • Poor quality cycle parking

To tackle, some of these key issues the scheme incorporates a route that if starting from Stairfoot roundabout links existing off-road cycle routes into Barnsley town centre, while combining key employment hubs, schools, bus links and shops through Ardsley, Darfield and into Goldthorpe. Commencing to the side of the A635 highway, with localised widening of existing footways, the scheme will provide safer active travel infrastructure to meet targets around uptake in cycle and walking numbers that is long lasting and has minor maintenance attached in its preceding years.

The scheme includes:

  • Widening footways that run parallel along the A635
  • Improving bus stop facilities with real time information, shelters and seating
  • Improving junctions along the route with side roads allowing active travel priority when crossing the junction
  • Improving street lighting
  • Adding way finders and signage
  • Improving connectivity between Fields End Business Park and Doncaster Road
  • Interventions along Fitzwilliam Street, Darfield to make the active travel route more suitable

Details of the route and proposed changes are outlined in the plans below. We are proposing two options. Both options include plans 1 to 3 but have two different options to end the scheme design.
